Fujitsu Air Conditioner 97 Error Code
Outdoor fan motor error. What it means, which models show it, and how to clear it, easiest fix first.
FujitsuAll Fujitsu air conditioner codes
The outdoor fan is turning far too slowly or not at all. Debris or ice against the blade, a locked or failed motor, high heat around the unit, or a board fault can cause it.
Compatible models
Fujitsu doesn't publish a model list for this code; it appears on Fujitsu air conditioners with a digital display. Check your owner's manual.
Also shown as
Lamp pattern: on models that show faults with the indicator lamps, Fujitsu's tables for many current wall-mounted (RL/RLS/RLX, LZAH), compact ducted (RGLX) and RLF multi-zone units show this code as the Operation lamp flashing 9 times and the Timer lamp flashing 7 times, with the Economy lamp marked "continuous". Other Fujitsu units, such as universal-mount and ceiling-suspended models, use different lamps. A wired controller shows the code as a number. Shown as 97.3 on some ceiling cassette models. Code 98 is the same fault on the second fan of two-fan outdoor units. On the older code set an outdoor fan fault used 1B. Fujitsu's older code set (for example older 9CQ/9RLQ/12CQ wall units, RMLQ-series multi-zone heads and some RCLX ceiling cassettes) uses different numbers for many faults, so always check the manual for your model.
Difficulty
Start with the safe checks below; a worn part may need replacing.
How to fix Fujitsu 97
Clear around the outdoor unit
With the breaker off, remove leaves, grass clippings, snow or anything stored against the outdoor unit, and keep about 2 ft (60 cm) clear on all sides. Brush loose debris off the outside of the coil fins by hand or with a soft brush; do not use a pressure washer or bend the fins. In winter, clear snow and ice from around the base and fan.
Look at the fan blade
With the breaker off, look through the grille for anything wedged against the blade. Clear debris from the outside of the grille only; don't reach through it or remove it, and leave anything lodged inside for the technician.
Reset the power at the breaker
Switch the system off with the remote, then turn off its circuit breaker in your home's main panel. Wait about 5 minutes, switch the breaker back on and restart the unit. If the code returns within a few minutes, write it down for the technician.
When to call a technician
If the blade is clear and the code returns, the fan motor or board needs an HVAC technician.
