GE Dryer F09 (long dry time) Error Code
Loads are taking too long to dry. Here is what it means and how to clear it, easiest fix first.
On GE CleanSpeak-style dryers that use F codes, F09 means drying is taking longer than it should. The most common cause is restricted airflow from a full lint filter or a clogged vent, which is also a fire risk. A heating problem can cause the same code.
Listed by Sears PartsDirect for GE CleanSpeak dryers, which show codes as F01–F011. On GE models that show three-digit codes, 009 means a drive motor fault, not long dry times. Check your manual to see which style your dryer uses.
How to fix GE F09 (long dry time)
Clean the lint filter
Remove every bit of lint from the filter. If it still looks clogged, wash it with warm water and a soft brush and let it dry completely.
Clear the vent
Unplug the dryer, pull it out gently (on a gas dryer, stop before the gas line is stretched, and never disconnect it yourself), disconnect the duct, and vacuum or brush out the lint. Check that the outside hood opens freely. A clogged vent makes loads take much longer and lets lint build up near hot parts, which can start a fire.
Check the power supply (electric models)
An electric dryer that tumbles but barely heats may have lost one of its two power legs. Switch its double breaker fully off and back on, or replace a blown fuse.
Run a test load
Dry a normal-size load on a heated cycle and see if the drying time returns to normal.
When to call a technician
If the vent is clear and loads still take too long, a technician should check the heating system. On a gas dryer, don't touch the gas valve, burner, or igniter yourself, and if you ever smell gas, leave the house right away and call your gas company from outside.

Frequently asked questions
What does F09 (long dry time) mean on a GE dryer?
On GE CleanSpeak-style dryers that use F codes, F09 means drying is taking longer than it should. The most common cause is restricted airflow from a full lint filter or a clogged vent, which is also a fire risk. A heating problem can cause the same code.
Can I fix GE F09 (long dry time) myself?
Often. The first steps above are safe checks a homeowner can do. If they don't clear F09 (long dry time), the cause is likely a worn part that needs replacing.
What if F09 (long dry time) keeps coming back?
A code that returns after a reset and the checks above usually means a part is wearing out. Note when F09 (long dry time) appears (which cycle, how often) and have your model number ready; it helps a technician bring the right part on the first visit.
