Refrigerator Room temperature and humidity sensor: What It Does and Signs It's Failing
A sensor that measures the kitchen around the fridge rather than the inside. Whirlpool pairs a room temperature sensor with a humidity sensor on some models, and LG lists codes for both. Where it sits varies by model; on the Whirlpool French-door models in its tech sheet, the sensor wires into the control on the door.

How it works
The board uses room temperature and humidity to adjust how the fridge runs, including, on models that have them, the small heaters that keep the door edges and center mullion from sweating.
Signs it is failing
- A room-temperature or humidity sensor code
- Condensation on the cabinet face or between the doors
- The code returns after a one-minute power reset
A room-sensor code doesn't mean a compartment sensor has failed. Whirlpool's own steps are a one-minute power reset, then a service call if the code comes back.
Can you replace it yourself?
Unplug the fridge or switch off the breaker for one minute, restore power and watch for a minute to see if the code returns. If it does, the sensor and its wiring are tied into the door controls, and LG and Whirlpool both send these codes to service.
Buying the right part
Some models use a separate sensor and others build it into the control panel, so let the tech confirm which part your model takes.
