GE Dishwasher C4 Error Code

Overfill float stuck or sump clogged. Here is what it means and how to clear it, easiest fix first.

C4
Moderate DIY

The dishwasher filled twice after a power failure. The overfill float may be stuck or failed, or the drain or sump may be clogged.

GE notes that not every code appears on every model; check your owner's manual.

Safety first: unplug the dishwasher (or switch off its breaker) before touching filters, hoses or panels. If you smell burning or gas, or see water near the outlet, stop and call a professional.

How to fix GE C4

  1. Clear the code

Touch Start, then cancel or reset the cycle.

  2. Free the float

Unplug the dishwasher or switch off its breaker. Find the float cover on the tub floor and tap it lightly so the float can move freely; remove anything wedged around it.

  3. Clean the sump

Check the sump at the back of the tub floor for food, paper or glass and remove it. Then restore power and run a cycle.

When to call a technician

If C4 returns with the float moving freely and the sump clean, schedule service.

Frequently asked questions

What does C4 mean on a GE dishwasher?

The dishwasher filled twice after a power failure. The overfill float may be stuck or failed, or the drain or sump may be clogged.

Can I fix GE C4 myself?

Often. The first steps above are safe checks a homeowner can do. If they don't clear C4, the cause is likely a worn part that needs replacing.

What if C4 keeps coming back?

A code that returns after a reset and the checks above usually means a part is wearing out. Note when C4 appears (which cycle, how often) and have your model number ready; it helps a technician bring the right part on the first visit.
