GE Dishwasher C1 / C2 Error Code
Draining is taking too long. What it means, which models show it, and how to clear it, easiest fix first.
The drain pump ran longer than expected: more than 2 minutes in one pump-out (C1) or more than 7 minutes in total (C2). A clogged air gap, a kinked drain hose or a blocked disposer is the usual cause.
Compatible models
GE doesn't publish a model list for this code; it appears on GE dishwashers with a digital display. Check your owner's manual.
Also shown as
GE notes that not every code appears on every model; check your owner's manual. On C2, pressing Reset stops the beeping.
Difficulty
Start with the safe checks below; a worn part may need replacing.
How to fix GE C1 / C2
Clean the filters and sump
Unplug the dishwasher or switch off its breaker. Remove the lower rack, take out the fine filters if your model has them, and rinse them. Clear paper, labels or food from the sump at the back of the tub floor. A cup or two of clean water left in the bottom is normal on many models.
Check the drain hose and sink drain
Under the sink, look for kinks or clogs in the drain hose. Run the garbage disposer before starting the dishwasher (never reach into the disposer), and if the disposer is new, make sure its knockout plug was removed. Do not pour chemical drain cleaner into the dishwasher.
Clean the air gap
If your sink has an air gap (a small cap near the faucet), pull off the cover and clear out food or debris. If there is no air gap, the drain hose needs a high loop under the counter as shown in your installation instructions.
Reset the power
Switch off the dishwasher's circuit breaker (or unplug it) for about 30 seconds, then restore power and start a new cycle.
When to call a technician
If the drain path is clear and the code keeps returning, the drain pump likely needs service.
