Dryer Exterior vent hood: What It Does and Signs It's Failing

The vent hood is the cap on the outside wall or roof where the dryer exhaust comes out. It has a damper flap that opens when the dryer runs and falls shut when it stops. It's the last stop for lint in the system.

How it works

Air pressure from the blower pushes the flap open. Lint builds up on the flap and in the opening, and in winter snow and ice can hold it shut. A flap that can't open makes the whole vent act blocked.

Signs it is failing

Airflow and check-vent codes can come from a hood that's stuck shut even when the duct behind it is clean.

Can you replace it yourself?

Run the dryer for 5 to 10 minutes and hold your hand under the hood. Whirlpool says the flow should feel at least as strong as a hair dryer on high; if it doesn't, clean out the hood and the full duct run. If you're replacing a hood high on the wall or on the roof, hire it out rather than working off a ladder.

Always unplug the dryer or switch off its breaker before opening any panel, and turn off water or gas where relevant.

Buying the right part

Get a hood with a 4 in (10 cm) opening and a damper. GE wants it at least 12 in (30 cm) above the ground or any obstruction, with the opening facing down.
