Whirlpool Dryer AF / F4E3 Error Code

Restricted airflow: lint screen or vent blocked. Here is what it means and how to clear it, easiest fix first.

AF / F4E3
Easy DIY fix

The dryer has sensed that air is not flowing out freely. The usual causes are a full lint screen, lint packed inside the vent duct or outside hood, or a duct that is crushed, kinked, or has too many bends. The dryer keeps running, but loads take longer, and lint building up in a hot vent is a real fire risk.

Newer models show F4E3 (sometimes written F4 E3); some models light a Check Vent indicator instead, and only during Automatic cycles. Older Duet front-load dryers show F:30 for the same problem. Maytag Centennial dryers also use F4 E3 for an airflow restriction.

Safety first: unplug the dryer (or switch off its breaker) before touching filters, hoses or panels. If you smell burning or gas, or see water near the outlet, stop and call a professional.

How to fix Whirlpool AF / F4E3

  1. Clean the lint screen

Pull out the lint screen and remove all the lint. If you use dryer sheets, wash the screen with warm water and a soft brush to clear the invisible film that can block air, then let it dry fully before putting it back.

  2. Check the duct behind the dryer

Unplug the dryer and gently pull it out a short way; on a gas dryer, stop if the gas line would be stretched or bent, and never disconnect it yourself. Straighten any crushed or kinked sections of duct. Plastic duct is a fire hazard and should be replaced with metal duct; your installation instructions say which metal duct types your model allows.

  3. Clear the vent and outside hood

With the dryer still unplugged, disconnect the duct from the dryer and vacuum or brush lint out of the whole run, then check that the flap on the outside hood opens freely and is not blocked by lint, a nest, snow, or ice. Your installation instructions list the maximum duct length and number of elbows for your vent type.

  4. Test the airflow and clear the code

Reconnect everything, plug in, and run a heated Timed Dry cycle for 5 to 10 minutes. Put your hand below the outside hood: a healthy vent pushes out a strong stream, roughly what you'd get from a hair dryer on its high setting. If it feels weaker, the run still needs cleaning. Touch any key to clear the code from the display.

When to call a technician

If airflow is still weak after cleaning, or the duct runs through walls or a roof you cannot reach, hire a dryer vent cleaning service. Do not keep using a dryer with a known blocked vent, because trapped lint can catch fire, and a blocked gas dryer vent can push carbon monoxide indoors.

Frequently asked questions

What does AF / F4E3 mean on a Whirlpool dryer?

The dryer has sensed that air is not flowing out freely. The usual causes are a full lint screen, lint packed inside the vent duct or outside hood, or a duct that is crushed, kinked, or has too many bends. The dryer keeps running, but loads take longer, and lint building up in a hot vent is a real fire risk.

Can I fix Whirlpool AF / F4E3 myself?

Usually, yes. Most AF / F4E3 problems clear with simple checks you can do at home. Start with the first step above: clean the lint screen.

What if AF / F4E3 keeps coming back?

A code that returns after a reset and the checks above usually means a part is wearing out. Note when AF / F4E3 appears (which cycle, how often) and have your model number ready; it helps a technician bring the right part on the first visit.
