Whirlpool Dryer PF Error Code

Power was interrupted during the cycle. Here is what it means and how to clear it, easiest fix first.

PF
Easy DIY fix

The power to the dryer was cut off while a cycle was running, for example during a brief outage or when a breaker tripped. The dryer stops and shows PF so you know the cycle did not finish normally.

Listed in Whirlpool's dryer code list and on Whirlpool Cabrio, Duet, and electronic-control models. Maytag Bravos dryers also show PF for a power failure.

Safety first: unplug the dryer (or switch off its breaker) before touching filters, hoses or panels. If you smell burning or gas, or see water near the outlet, stop and call a professional.

How to fix Whirlpool PF

  1. Restart or clear the cycle

Press and hold Start to resume the cycle, or press Power (or Stop on some models) to clear the display and choose a new cycle.

  2. Check the breaker or fuse

Look at your electrical panel for a tripped breaker or blown fuse. Electric dryers use two breakers or fuses, so check both. Reset or replace as needed.

  3. Look at the plug and cord

If PF keeps showing up when there was no power cut, unplug the dryer and check that the plug fits snugly in the outlet and the cord is not cut, scorched, or crushed. Do not use the dryer with a damaged cord.

When to call a technician

If PF appears often with no outages in your home, have an electrician check the outlet and circuit, or have a technician check the cord and its connections at the dryer.

Frequently asked questions

What does PF mean on a Whirlpool dryer?

The power to the dryer was cut off while a cycle was running, for example during a brief outage or when a breaker tripped. The dryer stops and shows PF so you know the cycle did not finish normally.

Can I fix Whirlpool PF myself?

Usually, yes. Most PF problems clear with simple checks you can do at home. Start with the first step above: restart or clear the cycle.

What if PF keeps coming back?

A code that returns after a reset and the checks above usually means a part is wearing out. Note when PF appears (which cycle, how often) and have your model number ready; it helps a technician bring the right part on the first visit.
