Whirlpool Dryer ERR Error Code

Door not fully closed and latched. Here is what it means and how to clear it, easiest fix first.

ERR
Easy DIY fix

The dryer will not start because it does not detect a latched door. A door can look shut while the latch has not caught, often because a piece of clothing is in the way.

Shown on some Whirlpool dryer models. Dryers with both an upper and a lower latch need both to engage.

Safety first: unplug the dryer (or switch off its breaker) before touching filters, hoses or panels. If you smell burning or gas, or see water near the outlet, stop and call a professional.

How to fix Whirlpool ERR

  1. Close the door firmly

Open the door, push any clothing back into the drum, and close it with a firm press until you feel or hear the latch catch.

  2. Check the latch area

Unplug the dryer, then look at the latch and strike on the door and cabinet for lint, a bent part, or something caught in the opening, and clear it by hand.

  3. Reset the dryer

Unplug the dryer or switch off its breaker(s) for 1 minute, restore power, and start a Timed Dry cycle. Watch for about 1 minute to see if ERR returns.

When to call a technician

If the door is clearly latched and ERR keeps coming back, the door switch or latch probably needs replacing. Never tape, wedge, or bypass a door switch.

Frequently asked questions

What does ERR mean on a Whirlpool dryer?

The dryer will not start because it does not detect a latched door. A door can look shut while the latch has not caught, often because a piece of clothing is in the way.

Can I fix Whirlpool ERR myself?

Usually, yes. Most ERR problems clear with simple checks you can do at home. Start with the first step above: close the door firmly.

What if ERR keeps coming back?

A code that returns after a reset and the checks above usually means a part is wearing out. Note when ERR appears (which cycle, how often) and have your model number ready; it helps a technician bring the right part on the first visit.
