Whirlpool Dryer F3E1 Error Code

Exhaust temperature sensor (thermistor) fault. Here is what it means and how to clear it, easiest fix first.

F3E1
May need a pro

The exhaust thermistor measures the temperature of the air leaving the drum so the control can manage the heat. F3E1 means the control is getting an impossible reading from it, usually because the sensor has failed open or shorted, or a wire to it is loose or damaged.

Older Cabrio and Maytag Bravos dryers show F-22 or F-23 for an exhaust thermistor failure; Duet dryers show F:22 or F:23 and call it the outlet thermistor. Maytag Centennial dryers also use F3 E1.

Safety first: unplug the dryer (or switch off its breaker) before touching filters, hoses or panels. If you smell burning or gas, or see water near the outlet, stop and call a professional.

How to fix Whirlpool F3E1

  1. Reset the dryer

Switch off the dryer's breaker(s), or unplug it, for 1 minute. Restore power, start a Timed Dry cycle, and watch for about 1 minute to see if the code returns.

  2. Clean the lint screen and check the vent

With the dryer unplugged, clean the lint screen and make sure the vent behind the dryer is not crushed or packed with lint. This won't fix a failed sensor, but heavy lint near hot parts is a fire risk, so it's worth doing before a technician visit.

When to call a technician

If the code returns, the exhaust thermistor or its wiring needs testing inside the cabinet, so book a technician. On a gas dryer, if you ever smell gas, leave the house right away and call your gas company from outside.

Frequently asked questions

What does F3E1 mean on a Whirlpool dryer?

The exhaust thermistor measures the temperature of the air leaving the drum so the control can manage the heat. F3E1 means the control is getting an impossible reading from it, usually because the sensor has failed open or shorted, or a wire to it is loose or damaged.

Can I fix Whirlpool F3E1 myself?

Only the basic checks. You can safely try the steps above, but F3E1 usually points to a part or fault that needs a technician.

What if F3E1 keeps coming back?

A code that returns after a reset and the checks above usually means a part is wearing out. Note when F3E1 appears (which cycle, how often) and have your model number ready; it helps a technician bring the right part on the first visit.
