Whirlpool Dryer F3E2 Error Code
Moisture sensor not reading the load. Here is what it means and how to clear it, easiest fix first.
The dryer uses metal sensor bars inside the drum to tell when clothes are dry. F3E2 appears when the control has gone through a run of loads (five, according to Whirlpool) and got no usable signal from those bars. Often the clothes simply are not touching the bars, because the load is very small or the dryer is not level, but a wiring or sensor fault is also possible.
Older Cabrio, Duet, and Maytag Bravos dryers show F-28 or F-29 (F:28/F:29 on Duet) for a moisture sensor fault. Maytag Centennial dryers also use F3 E2.
How to fix Whirlpool F3E2
Level the dryer
Place a level on the front edge or another flat part of the cabinet (the top may be slightly curved). Adjust the feet until the dryer is level side to side and front to back.
Dry fuller loads
A single item or a very small load may never brush against the sensor bars. Whirlpool suggests drying a bigger load, or switching to an Automatic cycle if you have been using Timed Dry.
Check the sensor bars
With the dryer unplugged, look at the metal strips inside the drum (often near the lint screen). Remove any coins, keys, or other metal objects in the drum that could short across them, and wipe the bars with a soft cloth.
Clear the code and reset
Press Power to clear the code. If it returns, switch off the breaker(s) for 1 minute, turn them back on, and run a Timed Dry cycle while you watch for the code.
When to call a technician
If the dryer is level, loads are normal size, and F3E2 keeps returning, the moisture sensor or its wiring needs to be checked by a technician.

Frequently asked questions
What does F3E2 mean on a Whirlpool dryer?
The dryer uses metal sensor bars inside the drum to tell when clothes are dry. F3E2 appears when the control has gone through a run of loads (five, according to Whirlpool) and got no usable signal from those bars. Often the clothes simply are not touching the bars, because the load is very small or the dryer is not level, but a wiring or sensor fault is also possible.
Can I fix Whirlpool F3E2 myself?
Often. The first steps above are safe checks a homeowner can do. If they don't clear F3E2, the cause is likely a worn part that needs replacing.
What if F3E2 keeps coming back?
A code that returns after a reset and the checks above usually means a part is wearing out. Note when F3E2 appears (which cycle, how often) and have your model number ready; it helps a technician bring the right part on the first visit.
