Refrigerator Condenser fan motor: What It Does and Signs It's Failing
A small fan in the machine compartment at the bottom back of most modern fridges. It pulls room air across the condenser coil and over the compressor to carry heat away.

How it works
It usually runs along with the compressor. Many newer models read a feedback signal from the fan, and LG sets a condenser fan code when that signal looks wrong.
Signs it is failing
- The back of the fridge runs hot
- Fridge and freezer slowly warming up
- A fan blade that won't turn freely or one that's packed with lint
- Squealing or ticking from the back bottom
- A condenser fan code
Condenser fan codes point straight at this fan. A clogged condenser coil has similar effects, so clean it at the same time.
Can you replace it yourself?
Pull the plug first. Then take off the rear lower access panel, clear anything jamming the blade and spin it by hand. A blade that won't turn freely means a new motor. It usually comes out with a couple of screws and a plug-in connector.
Buying the right part
Look the fan up by your model number. On models that monitor fan speed, a replacement without the matching connector and feedback wire won't do the job.
