How it works

Closing the door presses a plunger or a magnet passes a reed switch. If the board thinks a door stays open, it sounds the alarm.

Signs it is failing

Door-ajar and door-alarm codes usually come from a door that isn't fully closed. A worn hinge or failing switch is the next step.

Can you replace it yourself?

Look for bins, shelves or food holding the door open, and check that the fridge tilts slightly backward so doors swing shut. Many door switches pop out with a flat screwdriver once the fridge is unplugged. On Samsung models, communication codes can involve the harness connector above the door.

Always unplug the refrigerator or switch off its breaker before opening any panel, and turn off water or gas where relevant.

Buying the right part

Match the switch style and connector by full model number. Hinges are often handed (left or right).
