Refrigerator Water filter and housing: What It Does and Signs It's Failing
The cartridge that filters water for the dispenser and ice maker, plus the housing it twists into. Some models also have an internal water tank or an AutoFill pitcher that the fridge detects. GE's RPWFE filter carries a chip the fridge reads to track filter life and watch for leaks.

How it works
Water flows from the inlet valve through the housing and the filter cartridge on its way to the dispenser. On chip-reading models the fridge reads the filter's ID chip, and GE says an RPWFE filter without its chip won't work.
Signs it is failing
- Slow dispenser flow
- Filter or 'leak detected' messages
- Water dripping near the filter housing
- Tank or pitcher not-detected codes
- Bad-tasting water or cloudy ice
Filter messages and pitcher codes often clear once the part is reseated or replaced; GE says a new filter fixes most of its leak messages. LG treats its water tank code as a service call if reseating the tank doesn't help.
Can you replace it yourself?
Turn off the dispenser, remove the filter, check the O-rings, and reinstall with a firm turn until it locks. On GE RPWFE models the front label faces out and the side marked 'Back' faces the housing. RepairClinic suggests a new filter every six months or 200 to 300 gallons (760 to 1,150 liters), whichever comes first.
Buying the right part
Buy the filter listed for your model. Generic filters may not seal well, and chip-reading models can reject them.
