GE Refrigerator Leak Detected Error Code

Possible leak at the water filter. Here is what it means and how to clear it, easiest fix first.

Leak Detected
Easy DIY fix

On bottom-freezer models with a touch screen that use the RPWFE filter, the refrigerator reads a chip on the filter to monitor it. A Leak Detected message means it has flagged a possible leak at the filter. Most of the time, replacing or reseating the filter clears it.

Only on bottom-freezer models with an LCD touch screen that use the RPWFE filter. Filters without the RFID chip, including many non-genuine ones, won't work in these models.

Safety first: unplug the refrigerator (or switch off its breaker) before touching filters, hoses or panels. If you smell burning or gas, or see water near the outlet, stop and call a professional.

How to fix GE Leak Detected

  1. Check for water

Look in and around the filter housing for drips or pooling. If water has reached an outlet or the power cord, switch off the breaker before touching anything.

  2. Reseat the filter correctly

Take the filter out and put it back in with the printed front label toward you and the end marked Back pointing into the housing. A filter that isn't seated straight can trigger the message.

  3. Make sure the filter is genuine

Genuine RPWFE filters carry an ID chip that the refrigerator reads; GE explains on its support site where to look for it under the filter label. A filter without the chip won't work in these models, so replace it with a genuine one, or with a fresh one if it's due for a change.

When to call a technician

If the message stays on after a correctly installed genuine filter, or water keeps leaking, schedule service.
