GE Refrigerator dE Error Code

Defrost system not working properly. Here is what it means and how to clear it, easiest fix first.

dE
May need a pro

The defrost system hasn't completed a proper cycle recently. GE says the code means defrost hasn't run correctly in the last 24 hours, while repair references describe a defrost cycle that hasn't run for more than 48 hours. Left alone, frost builds up on the cooling coil and the refrigerator gradually warms.

Lowercase "dE" means a defrost problem. Uppercase "DE" on the same display means demo mode, which is a different issue. If the room is below 55°F (13°C), going a long time without defrosting can be normal.

Safety first: unplug the refrigerator (or switch off its breaker) before touching filters, hoses or panels. If you smell burning or gas, or see water near the outlet, stop and call a professional.

How to fix GE dE

  1. Reset the control

Unplug the refrigerator for a minute or two and plug it back in, or press System Check if your model has it.

  2. Look for frost build-up

Check the back wall of the freezer and the air vents. A thick, even coat of frost or ice suggests the defrost system has stopped working.

  3. Defrost safely as a stopgap

Unplug the refrigerator, move food to coolers, and leave the doors open with towels on the floor. Let the ice melt naturally, which can take most of a day. Don't use a heat gun, hair dryer, or sharp tool, because you can puncture the cooling coil.

When to call a technician

If dE returns or the frost comes back, book a technician to test the defrost heater, defrost thermostat, and wiring.

Frequently asked questions

What does dE mean on a GE refrigerator?

The defrost system hasn't completed a proper cycle recently. GE says the code means defrost hasn't run correctly in the last 24 hours, while repair references describe a defrost cycle that hasn't run for more than 48 hours. Left alone, frost builds up on the cooling coil and the refrigerator gradually warms.

Can I fix GE dE myself?

Only the basic checks. You can safely try the steps above, but dE usually points to a part or fault that needs a technician.

What if dE keeps coming back?

A code that returns after a reset and the checks above usually means a part is wearing out. Note when dE appears (which cycle, how often) and have your model number ready; it helps a technician bring the right part on the first visit.
