GE Refrigerator DE Error Code
Demo mode is on. Here is what it means and how to clear it, easiest fix first.
The refrigerator is in demo (showroom) mode, so lights and controls work but the cooling system is off. Units sometimes leave the store or warehouse still in this mode. It is not a fault, but food will warm up until it's cleared.
Uppercase "DE" means demo mode. Lowercase "dE" means a defrost problem; read the display carefully.
How to fix GE DE
Power cycle the refrigerator
Unplug the refrigerator, or switch off its breaker, for a minute or two, then restore power. On many models this takes it out of demo mode.
Confirm it's cooling
Check that DE no longer shows and that the compartments start getting colder over the next few hours.
When to call a technician
If DE still shows after a power cycle, contact GE Appliances with your model number for the exit steps for your model.

Frequently asked questions
What does DE mean on a GE refrigerator?
The refrigerator is in demo (showroom) mode, so lights and controls work but the cooling system is off. Units sometimes leave the store or warehouse still in this mode. It is not a fault, but food will warm up until it's cleared.
Can I fix GE DE myself?
Usually, yes. Most DE problems clear with simple checks you can do at home. Start with the first step above: power cycle the refrigerator.
What if DE keeps coming back?
A code that returns after a reset and the checks above usually means a part is wearing out. Note when DE appears (which cycle, how often) and have your model number ready; it helps a technician bring the right part on the first visit.
