Whirlpool Refrigerator FAE1 Error Code
Evaporator fan fault on Whirlpool refrigerators.
WhirlpoolAll Whirlpool refrigerator codes
The control has flagged the fan that moves cold air off the evaporator coil. If it stops or runs at the wrong speed, cold air doesn't circulate, so the compartments warm up even though the compressor is running. Ice hitting the fan blade is a common cause.
Compatible models
It comes from Whirlpool's W11446054 tech sheet, which doesn't say which refrigerator models it covers.
Also shown as
The tech sheet lists it as a fault with the refrigerator-side or main evaporator fan. Which fan the code points to, and the letters themselves, vary by platform.
Difficulty
Try the basic checks, but the usual fix is a technician's job.

How to fix Whirlpool FAE1
Reset the power
Unplug the fridge or switch off its breaker for one minute, restore power and make sure cooling is on.
Listen for the fan
With the fridge running and the doors closed for a few minutes, open the freezer and listen right away for air moving at the rear vents. Silence, or a ticking or scraping sound, can mean ice is catching the blade.
Defrost if ice is in the way
If there's heavy frost on the back wall, unplug the fridge, move food to coolers and let the ice melt with the doors open and towels down. No heat guns or sharp tools.
When to call a technician
If the code returns after a reset and defrost, a technician should test the fan motor and its wiring and find out why ice formed.
