Friedrich Air Conditioner E1 Error Code

Short cycling or a sensor fault, depending on model on Friedrich air conditioners.

E1
Moderate DIY

What E1 means depends on which Friedrich you own. On the 2008-2009 room units, it's a logged record that the compressor was powered on before its 3-minute delay had run out, ten times within an hour. On Uni-Fit through-the-wall units it means a sensor has failed, and on ZoneAire portables it's the temperature sensor.

Compatible models

Friedrich's 2008-2009 room air conditioners (QuietMaster, XStar, Premium and TwinTemp), Uni-Fit through-the-wall models in the UCT and UET series (such as UCT10A30A and UET12A33A), and ZoneAire portables ZCP12DA, ZHP14DA and ZHP14DB.

Also shown as

The Uni-Fit manual lists E1 and E2 together with the same cause, a failed sensor. The ZoneAire manual names E1 as the temperature sensor and gives no owner fix. Check which manual matches your model before acting on it.

Difficulty

Safety first: unplug the air conditioner (or switch off its breaker) before touching filters, hoses or panels. If you smell burning or gas, or see water near the outlet, stop and call a professional.

How to fix Friedrich E1

  1. Stop switching it on and off

Rapid on-off cycling from the buttons or a smart plug is what this logged code records on the older room units. Leave the unit on and let the thermostat do the work.

  2. Clean the filter

Unplug the unit, slide the filter out from behind the front grille, and wash it in warm water. Let it dry before putting it back.

  3. Restart a Uni-Fit or ZoneAire once

Unplug it for a few minutes and plug it back in. A sensor code that returns right away won't clear with more restarts.

When to call a technician

Friedrich's Uni-Fit manual says to contact customer service if E1 shows, and the ZoneAire manual gives no owner fix. On older window units, a technician needs to find what's causing the short cycling.

Frequently asked questions

Which Friedrich models show the E1 code?

Friedrich's 2008-2009 room air conditioners (QuietMaster, XStar, Premium and TwinTemp), Uni-Fit through-the-wall models in the UCT and UET series (such as UCT10A30A and UET12A33A), and ZoneAire portables ZCP12DA, ZHP14DA and ZHP14DB.

Can I fix Friedrich E1 myself?

Often. The first steps above are safe checks a homeowner can do. If they don't clear E1, the cause is likely a worn part that needs replacing.
