LG Air Conditioner CH61 Error Code
Unit overheating. Here is what it means and how to clear it, easiest fix first.
The system shut down because a heat exchanger got too hot. In cooling mode the outdoor unit can't shed heat, usually because its airflow is blocked, its coil is dirty or it sits in a very hot or enclosed space. In heating mode the indoor unit is too hot, most often because of a clogged filter.
Depending on the model, the same overheating protection may show as P4, P6, P7, P8 or CH34; check your owner's manual. LG notes this code does not clear by itself; it needs a power reset.
How to fix LG CH61
Clean the indoor filters
Switch off the breaker, remove the indoor filters, rinse them in lukewarm water and let them dry before refitting. In heating mode this is the most common fix.
Give the outdoor unit room to breathe
Move furniture, storage and plants away from all sides of the outdoor unit. If it's on an enclosed porch or balcony, open the windows or vents around it so hot air can escape.
Clear the outdoor coil
With the power off, wear gloves and use a soft brush to sweep leaves, lint and dust off the outdoor coil from top to bottom. Brush gently so you don't bend the thin fins, and never use a pressure washer.
Reset the power at the breaker
Switch off the breaker that feeds the air conditioner (some systems have separate breakers for the indoor and outdoor units, so switch off both). Wait about five minutes, switch the power back on and restart the unit to see if the code clears.
When to call a technician
If CH61 comes back after the filters and outdoor coil are clean and the unit has clear airflow, have a technician inspect it.

Frequently asked questions
What does CH61 mean on a LG air conditioner?
The system shut down because a heat exchanger got too hot. In cooling mode the outdoor unit can't shed heat, usually because its airflow is blocked, its coil is dirty or it sits in a very hot or enclosed space. In heating mode the indoor unit is too hot, most often because of a clogged filter.
Can I fix LG CH61 myself?
Often. The first steps above are safe checks a homeowner can do. If they don't clear CH61, the cause is likely a worn part that needs replacing.
What if CH61 keeps coming back?
A code that returns after a reset and the checks above usually means a part is wearing out. Note when CH61 appears (which cycle, how often) and have your model number ready; it helps a technician bring the right part on the first visit.
