Samsung Air Conditioner E461 / E464 Error Code
Compressor or inverter fault. Here is what it means and how to clear it, easiest fix first.
The outdoor unit's inverter couldn't start or run the compressor properly. E461 means the compressor failed to start or run; E464 means the inverter's power module detected too much current. A failing compressor, inverter board or wiring problem is usually behind it.
Shown as E or C. Samsung uses a cluster of related outdoor codes in the 460s and 470s, such as E467 (compressor wiring not connected or rotation abnormal) and E473 (compressor locked). Meanings here come from Samsung service and installation manuals for specific model families; codes vary by series and region, so check your owner's or service manual.
How to fix Samsung E461 / E464
Reset the power at the breaker
Switch off the breaker that feeds the air conditioner (some systems have separate breakers for the indoor and outdoor units, so switch off both). Wait about five minutes, switch the power back on and restart the unit to see if the code clears.
Stop if the code comes straight back
If the code reappears after the reset, switch the system off and leave it off rather than restarting it again and again. Repeated restarts against a protection fault can strain the compressor and other outdoor parts.
When to call a technician
Inverter and compressor faults involve high-voltage parts inside the outdoor unit, so stop using the system if the code returns and book a technician.

Frequently asked questions
What does E461 / E464 mean on a Samsung air conditioner?
The outdoor unit's inverter couldn't start or run the compressor properly. E461 means the compressor failed to start or run; E464 means the inverter's power module detected too much current. A failing compressor, inverter board or wiring problem is usually behind it.
Can I fix Samsung E461 / E464 myself?
Only the basic checks. You can safely try the steps above, but E461 / E464 usually points to a part or fault that needs a technician.
What if E461 / E464 keeps coming back?
A code that returns after a reset and the checks above usually means a part is wearing out. Note when E461 / E464 appears (which cycle, how often) and have your model number ready; it helps a technician bring the right part on the first visit.
