Dryer Drive motor: What It Does and Signs It's Failing

The drive motor turns the drum through the belt, and on many models a second shaft spins the blower wheel that moves air through the dryer. Inside it is a centrifugal switch. It only lets the heater come on once the motor is up to speed.

How it works

As the motor speeds up, weights in the centrifugal switch swing out and flip its contacts. That takes the start winding out of the circuit and closes the contacts that let the heat come on. If the switch fails, the motor may hum without starting, or the drum may turn with no heat.

Signs it is failing

Motor codes and drum-not-turning codes point here or to the belt. If the motor hums but nothing moves, stop pressing Start and unplug the dryer, since repeated tries overheat the motor.

Can you replace it yourself?

With the dryer unplugged, check the belt first: if the drum spins freely by hand, the belt is the problem, not the motor. A failed motor or centrifugal switch means moving the blower wheel and reconnecting the motor wiring, so have a technician do it.

Always unplug the dryer or switch off its breaker before opening any panel, and turn off water or gas where relevant.

Buying the right part

Motors vary in shaft and wiring, so the part has to match the model number. Many techs replace the belt and idler at the same visit.
