Refrigerator Ice maker assembly: What It Does and Signs It's Failing

The module in the freezer or fridge door that fills a tray, freezes the water and dumps the cubes into the bin. It includes the tray, a small motor, sensors, and on many models a fill tube with a heater that keeps the line from freezing.

How it works

The inlet valve sends water through the fill tube into the tray. Once the tray is cold enough, the motor ejects the cubes and a bail arm or sensor checks whether the bin is full.

Signs it is failing

Ice maker function and fill-path heater codes point here. Freezer temperature, the water filter and the inlet valve are worth checking first.

Can you replace it yourself?

Check that the ice maker is switched on and the freezer is around 0 to 5°F (-18 to -15°C); above about 10°F (-12°C) production falls off. With the fridge unplugged, thaw a frozen fill tube with a hair dryer on low. Most freezer ice makers unplug and come off with two or three screws; in-door units are harder.

Always unplug the refrigerator or switch off its breaker before opening any panel, and turn off water or gas where relevant.

Buying the right part

Many internal parts aren't sold separately, so the assembly is often replaced whole. Get the OEM unit for your model number.
