The small fan that pushes cold air to the ice maker in the fridge door isn't working right. Frost around the fan or a failed fan motor are the usual causes. Ice production tends to slow down or stop while the code is up.
Compatible models
40E only appears on Samsung refrigerators with an ice maker in the fresh food door, since that's where the ice room fan sits.

How to fix Samsung 40E
Check the ice bucket and door
Make sure the ice bucket is pushed fully in and locked, and that the fridge door closes firmly. A bucket that's not seated lets warm air into the ice compartment.
Reset the power
Photograph the code, then unplug the fridge or switch off its breaker for about 1 minute and restore power. Note whether the code comes back.
Leave the ice maker area alone
Samsung warns against melting ice in the ice maker area yourself or pointing a hair dryer at it, because that can damage the unit. Leave stuck ice for the technician.
When to call a technician
Samsung lists 40E as a service code. If it returns after a reset, book service for the ice room fan and its defrost parts.
