Whirlpool Washer F21 Error Code

Drain problem (older front-loaders). Here is what it means and how to clear it, easiest fix first.

F21
Moderate DIY

F21 is an older-style front-load code meaning the washer couldn't drain properly. The causes match F9E1: a kinked or clogged drain hose, a clogged pump filter, or a failing pump.

Used on older two-digit-display front-loaders such as Duet steam models. Newer models show the same problem as F9E1 (F9 E1).

Safety first: unplug the washer (or switch off its breaker) before touching filters, hoses or panels. If you smell burning or gas, or see water near the outlet, stop and call a professional.

How to fix Whirlpool F21

  1. Check the drain hose for kinks

Pull the washer out carefully and straighten any kinks or bends in the drain hose. Make sure the hose isn't pinched behind the machine.

  2. Look for clogs

Check that the standpipe or sink drain isn't blocked. With the washer unplugged and a towel and pan ready, clean the drain pump filter if your model has one, removing lint and small objects. Let the water cool first if a hot cycle just ran.

  3. Reset the washer's control

Unplug the washer, or switch off its circuit breaker, and leave it without power for a full 5 minutes. Restore power, choose your cycle again, and press Start. A reset can sometimes clear a one-time glitch in the electronics.

When to call a technician

If the drain path is clear and F21 keeps returning, have a technician test the drain pump and replace it if needed.

Can I fix Whirlpool F21 myself?

Often. The first steps above are safe checks a homeowner can do. If they don't clear F21, the cause is likely a worn part that needs replacing.

What if F21 keeps coming back?

A code that returns after a reset and the checks above usually means a part is wearing out. Note when F21 appears (which cycle, how often) and have your model number ready; it helps a technician bring the right part on the first visit.
