Whirlpool Washer HC Error Code
Hot and cold hoses reversed. Here is what it means and how to clear it, easiest fix first.
The washer sensed that hot water is coming in through the cold inlet and vice versa. You'll usually see the code once the wash portion of the cycle is over.
Top-load models. Repair guides list F8E5 for the same reversed-hose condition on some Cabrio-style models.
How to fix Whirlpool HC
Shut off the water
Unplug the washer and turn off both supply faucets. Keep a towel and bucket handy for water left in the hoses.
Swap the hoses
Disconnect the hoses from the back of the washer and reconnect them so the hot faucet feeds the hot inlet and the cold faucet feeds the cold inlet. Tighten by hand plus a small extra turn.
Run a test cycle
Turn the water back on, check for leaks, plug the washer in, and run a cycle to confirm the code is gone.
When to call a technician
If the hoses are connected correctly and the code still appears, the inlet temperature sensor or its wiring may be faulty and should be checked by a technician.

Frequently asked questions
What does HC mean on a Whirlpool washer?
The washer sensed that hot water is coming in through the cold inlet and vice versa. You'll usually see the code once the wash portion of the cycle is over.
Can I fix Whirlpool HC myself?
Usually, yes. Most HC problems clear with simple checks you can do at home. Start with the first step above: shut off the water.
What if HC keeps coming back?
A code that returns after a reset and the checks above usually means a part is wearing out. Note when HC appears (which cycle, how often) and have your model number ready; it helps a technician bring the right part on the first visit.
