Whirlpool Washer F5E2 Error Code

Door or lid won't lock. Here is what it means and how to clear it, easiest fix first.

F5E2
Easy DIY fix

The washer tried to lock the door or lid before starting but the lock didn't engage. An item caught in the opening, an overfilled drum, or detergent buildup on the lock is a common cause. A failed lock assembly can also trigger it.

Front-load and top-load models; also written F5 E2. On some top-load displays the same problem shows as LdL (lid not locking). Older Duet steam front-loaders use F22 for a door lock failure.

Safety first: unplug the washer (or switch off its breaker) before touching filters, hoses or panels. If you smell burning or gas, or see water near the outlet, stop and call a professional.

How to fix Whirlpool F5E2

  1. Re-latch the door or lid

Open the door or lid and close it firmly so it fully latches. Make sure nothing is resting on top of a top-load lid.

  2. Check for obstructions and overloading

Make sure no clothing is caught in the door seal or lid opening. If the drum is packed tight, take a few items out so the load has room to move.

  3. Clean the lock area

With the washer unplugged, wipe the latch and the lock opening with a damp cloth to remove detergent residue or lint. Let it dry before you plug the washer back in.

  4. Reset the washer's control

Unplug the washer, or switch off its circuit breaker, and leave it without power for a full 5 minutes. Restore power, choose your cycle again, and press Start. A reset can sometimes clear a one-time glitch in the electronics.

When to call a technician

If the door or lid still won't lock after cleaning and a reset, have a technician check the lock assembly and its wiring. Never try to tape, jumper, or otherwise defeat the lock.
