How it works
When the door closes it presses against the gasket, which flexes and seals the gap. The gasket is usually pressed into a channel or held by clips.
Signs it is failing
- Water dripping from the front of the machine
- A gasket that's cracked, flattened, torn or hanging out of its channel
- Mold or black buildup along the seal
- Wet floor only during the wash part of the cycle
A tired gasket can trip leak or base-pan codes once enough water gets under the machine. Check it whenever you see water at the front.
Can you replace it yourself?
Wipe the gasket clean and look for cracks, flat spots or gaps at the corners. Most gaskets pull out of their channel and the new one presses in by hand. Use the wrong detergent or too much of it and suds can push past even a good gasket.
Buying the right part
Buy the gasket for your exact model; length and profile vary between models, and some machines also use separate corner baffles at the bottom of the door.
