LG Dishwasher AE / E1 Error Code

Leak detected in the base. Here is what it means and how to clear it, easiest fix first.

AE / E1
Moderate DIY

Water reached the base pan under the tub and lifted the leak float switch, so the dishwasher stops to protect your floor. Common causes are an unlevel unit, a dirty or damaged door gasket, blocked spray arms, or suds from too much or the wrong detergent.

One LG help article groups AE, EI and FE together as leak/overfill codes, while another treats FE as a separate overfill code. The display may read E1 on some models. The code will not clear until the base pan dries.

Safety first: unplug the dishwasher (or switch off its breaker) before touching filters, hoses or panels. If you smell burning or gas, or see water near the outlet, stop and call a professional.

How to fix LG AE / E1

  1. Check your detergent

Use only automatic dishwasher detergent and only one pod or tablet per load. If you use powder or gel, do not fill past the marked lines. Never use hand dishwashing liquid.

  2. Clean the door gasket and spray arms

Switch off the dishwasher's breaker, since water may have collected under the unit near its wiring. Wipe food and grease off the door gasket and the tub edge it seals against. Take out the spray arms, clear blocked holes with a soft brush and warm soapy water, and refit them.

  3. Dry the base pan

Switch off the dishwasher's breaker. Remove the two screws holding the kick plate at the bottom front and lift it off, then soak up any water you can reach. If you cannot reach the base, leave the kick plate off for 24 to 48 hours so the water evaporates.

  4. Check level and reset

Pour about a gallon (4 L) of water into the empty tub; if it pools to one side, the unit needs leveling (see your installation guide, and turn off water and power first). Refit the kick plate, switch the breaker back on, and run an empty cycle.

When to call a technician

If you see water on the floor with no obvious cause, the gasket or a spray arm is damaged, or the code returns after the base is dry, request LG service.

Frequently asked questions

What does AE / E1 mean on a LG dishwasher?

Water reached the base pan under the tub and lifted the leak float switch, so the dishwasher stops to protect your floor. Common causes are an unlevel unit, a dirty or damaged door gasket, blocked spray arms, or suds from too much or the wrong detergent.

Can I fix LG AE / E1 myself?

Often. The first steps above are safe checks a homeowner can do. If they don't clear AE / E1, the cause is likely a worn part that needs replacing.

What if AE / E1 keeps coming back?

A code that returns after a reset and the checks above usually means a part is wearing out. Note when AE / E1 appears (which cycle, how often) and have your model number ready; it helps a technician bring the right part on the first visit.
