About KitchenAid dishwasher error codes
KitchenAid is an American brand owned by Whirlpool Corporation. Its dishwashers and other appliances often use the same F-and-E code format as Whirlpool, for example F9E1, where the first part points to the system and the second to the specific fault.
How to read KitchenAid dishwasher codes
Models with a digital display show the code on screen in an F#E# pattern, such as F9E1. If the screen has gone dark, press any button to wake it. Models without a display blink the code on the Clean light: count the first burst of flashes for the F number, wait through the 1 to 2 second pause, then count the second burst for the E number. The pattern repeats after a longer gap of about 5 seconds, so 7 flashes, a pause and 1 flash means F7E1.
A reset means cutting power to the control for 30 seconds. Unplug a plug-in unit, or switch off the breaker that feeds a hard-wired one, wait, then restore power. Exact codes vary by model, so your owner's manual or control guide is the final word on what your machine shows.
Of the 19 codes on this page, 4 usually have a simple fix you can do yourself, and 11 usually need a technician. Each guide says which is which, so you don't pay for a service call you don't need, and you don't attempt a repair that isn't safe.
Before you start
- Write down your model number. It's on a sticker, usually inside the door or lid, on the frame, or on the back or side panel. Parts and some code meanings depend on it.
- Try a reset. Unplug the dishwasher or switch off its breaker for 10 minutes. This clears many one-off glitches without tools.
- Clean the filter at the bottom of the tub. A clogged filter is behind many drain and wash codes.
