GE Washer dE Error Code

Lid is open. Here is what it means and how to clear it, easiest fix first.

dE
Easy DIY fix

The washer sensed that the lid was opened or isn't shut, so it paused the cycle. The code blinks for roughly half a minute, then the washer turns itself off and the cycle has to be restarted.

Top-load. Some models show 'E2' or scroll 'LId' for the same condition.

Safety first: unplug the washer (or switch off its breaker) before touching filters, hoses or panels. If you smell burning or gas, or see water near the outlet, stop and call a professional.

How to fix GE dE

  1. Close the lid and restart

Close the lid firmly and restart the cycle. Make sure no clothing is caught under the lid.

  2. Check what the lid presses on

Unplug the washer and look at the lid and the area where it closes for anything blocking it, such as a bent hinge or debris. Do not tape, prop, or otherwise defeat the lid switch.

When to call a technician

If dE appears with the lid fully closed, the lid switch or its wiring likely needs service.

Frequently asked questions

What does dE mean on a GE washer?

The washer sensed that the lid was opened or isn't shut, so it paused the cycle. The code blinks for roughly half a minute, then the washer turns itself off and the cycle has to be restarted.

Can I fix GE dE myself?

Usually, yes. Most dE problems clear with simple checks you can do at home. Start with the first step above: close the lid and restart.

What if dE keeps coming back?

A code that returns after a reset and the checks above usually means a part is wearing out. Note when dE appears (which cycle, how often) and have your model number ready; it helps a technician bring the right part on the first visit.
