GE Washer Lid Locked Error Code

Open the lid to start a new cycle. Here is what it means and how to clear it, easiest fix first.

Lid Locked
Easy DIY fix

On some top-loaders the Lid or Lid Locked light means three cycles were started in a row without the lid being opened, so the washer will not start another until it is. During normal operation the same light simply means the lid is locked for load sensing, filling, or spinning.

Top-load. Lid locking is used on 2015-and-newer top-loaders; models without the Precise Fill feature lock only during spin.

Safety first: unplug the washer (or switch off its breaker) before touching filters, hoses or panels. If you smell burning or gas, or see water near the outlet, stop and call a professional.

How to fix GE Lid Locked

  1. Open and close the lid

Lift the lid fully, close it again, and start a new cycle.

  2. Pause and wait during spin

If you need the lid open mid-cycle, press Start/Pause. During spin the lid stays locked until the basket stops, which can take up to 3 minutes.

  3. Reset the washer

If the lid stays locked after the basket has stopped, unplug the washer for one minute, then plug it back in.

When to call a technician

If the lid will not unlock after a reset or the message keeps returning, schedule service for the lid lock.
