GE Washer E22 Error Code

Fill took too long. Here is what it means and how to clear it, easiest fix first.

E22
Easy DIY fix

The washer did not reach its target water level within the time it allows for filling. The usual causes are a partly closed faucet, a kinked hose, clogged inlet screens, or low water pressure. A failing water inlet valve can also cause it.

Front-load fault code on newer GE front-loaders. On some older GE Profile front-loaders, E22 is instead listed as an internal drive motor fault, so check your model's tech sheet before buying parts.

Safety first: unplug the washer (or switch off its breaker) before touching filters, hoses or panels. If you smell burning or gas, or see water near the outlet, stop and call a professional.

How to fix GE E22

  1. Open the supply faucets fully

Make sure both the hot and cold faucets are turned all the way open. A faucet that is only partly open can let in enough water to start, but not enough to finish filling in time.

  2. Straighten or replace the hoses

Check both fill hoses for kinks, bulges, or cracks. Straighten any bends, and replace a hose that is swollen or damaged; braided stainless hoses are a good upgrade.

  3. Clean the inlet valve screens

Unplug the washer and shut off the water. Disconnect the hoses at the washer and clear debris from the mesh screens in the inlet ports with a soft brush or needle-nose pliers, without tearing the mesh. Reconnect and check for drips.

  4. Check for a siphoning drain hose

If the drain hose is pushed too far down the standpipe or sealed into it, water can siphon out as it fills, so the level never rises. The hose end should sit only a few inches into the standpipe, held by its clip, and not be taped airtight.

When to call a technician

If the code returns after you have ruled out supply, hoses, screens, and the drain hose, have a technician test the water inlet valve.

Frequently asked questions

What does E22 mean on a GE washer?

The washer did not reach its target water level within the time it allows for filling. The usual causes are a partly closed faucet, a kinked hose, clogged inlet screens, or low water pressure. A failing water inlet valve can also cause it.

Can I fix GE E22 myself?

Usually, yes. Most E22 problems clear with simple checks you can do at home. Start with the first step above: open the supply faucets fully.

What if E22 keeps coming back?

A code that returns after a reset and the checks above usually means a part is wearing out. Note when E22 appears (which cycle, how often) and have your model number ready; it helps a technician bring the right part on the first visit.
