GE Washer E30 Error Code

Washer will not drain. Here is what it means and how to clear it, easiest fix first.

E30
Moderate DIY

The washer could not pump the water out of the tub. Common causes are heavy suds, a clogged pump filter, a kinked drain hose or a blocked house drain; a failed drain pump is also possible.

Front-load fault code. See E31 for a slow drain, and Po for the similar message on top-loaders.

Safety first: unplug the washer (or switch off its breaker) before touching filters, hoses or panels. If you smell burning or gas, or see water near the outlet, stop and call a professional.

How to fix GE E30

  1. Check the drain hose

Unplug the washer. Look behind it for a kinked or crushed drain hose and straighten it. Make sure the hose outlet is no higher than about 8 feet above the floor.

  2. Test the house drain

Lift the drain hose out of the standpipe and slowly pour about a quart of water into the standpipe. If it backs up, the household drain is clogged and needs a plumber, not a washer repair.

  3. Clean the pump filter

With the washer unplugged, open the small access door at the lower front, set out towels and a shallow pan, and drain the water through the small drain tube if your model has one. Turn the filter counterclockwise slowly to let remaining water out, remove coins, hair ties, or lint, then reinstall it firmly. If a hot cycle just ran, wait for the water to cool before opening the filter.

  4. Cut back on detergent

Thick suds can stop a front-loader from draining. Run a rinse and spin with no detergent, then use only HE detergent at the amount the label recommends.

When to call a technician

If the filter and hose are clear and the washer still holds water or only hums, the drain pump likely needs replacing by a technician.

Frequently asked questions

What does E30 mean on a GE washer?

The washer could not pump the water out of the tub. Common causes are heavy suds, a clogged pump filter, a kinked drain hose or a blocked house drain; a failed drain pump is also possible.

Can I fix GE E30 myself?

Often. The first steps above are safe checks a homeowner can do. If they don't clear E30, the cause is likely a worn part that needs replacing.

What if E30 keeps coming back?

A code that returns after a reset and the checks above usually means a part is wearing out. Note when E30 appears (which cycle, how often) and have your model number ready; it helps a technician bring the right part on the first visit.
