Washer Drive motor and belt: What It Does and Signs It's Failing
The drive motor turns the drum for washing and spinning. Many front-loaders use a direct-drive motor: a fixed stator and a magnet rotor that turns the drum. Others use a brushed motor and a belt, and some top-loaders that open from the top of the drum need it to stop in a set position.

How it works
The control powers the motor and watches a speed or position signal, which on many direct-drive motors comes from a Hall sensor on the stator. If the drum doesn't reach the speed the control expects, it stops and posts a motor code. On brushed motors, the carbon brushes wear down with use and eventually lose contact.
Signs it is failing
- Drum won't turn, or turns slowly and stops
- Spin never gets up to speed and clothes stay wet
- Burning smell from the back of the machine
- Squealing or a burning-rubber smell on belt-drive models
- Motor or speed code that comes back after a reset
Motor-locked, overload and speed-sensing codes land here, but first rule out an overloaded drum, a coin jammed in the drum, and shipping bolts left in a new washer. On top-loaders that park the drum, a drum position code points to the position sensor or drum lock.
Can you replace it yourself?
Take out part of the load, check for anything jammed in the drum, and unplug the washer for five minutes to reset the control. A belt swap is a fair home job with the washer unplugged. Worn carbon brushes, sensor faults and motor wiring are a job for a technician, and Bosch sends its own engineers for brushes.
Buying the right part
Stators, rotors, Hall sensors, brushes and belts are often sold separately, so find out which piece failed before you order. Belts differ by length and width.
