This is the outdoor air sensor (T4), the one that tells the system how hot or cold it is outside. When it reads open or shorted, the outdoor unit stops because it can't manage defrost or cooling capacity.

Compatible models

Midea's outdoor units for its four-character-code mini-splits. Midea's code sheets don't list model numbers.

Also shown as

Was F1 before the code change. EC 52 and EC 54 are other outdoor sensors and have their own pages.

Difficulty

Try the basic checks, but the usual fix is a technician's job.

Safety first: unplug the air conditioner (or switch off its breaker) before touching filters, hoses or panels. If you smell burning or gas, or see water near the outlet, stop and call a professional.

How to fix Midea EC 53

  1. Clear around the outdoor unit

Shut off the outdoor disconnect, then pull leaves, snow and debris away from the outdoor unit. HVACDirect suggests this before a power reset for the outdoor sensor codes.

  2. Look for obvious damage

Look over the outdoor unit for chewed wiring or a cover that's been knocked loose. Don't open the unit's service panel.

When to call a technician

The sensor is inside the outdoor unit near live parts, so replacement is a technician job.
