Washer Wire harness and power cord: What It Does and Signs It's Failing

Wire harnesses are the bundles of wires and plugs that link the boards to the motor, pump, valves, lock and sensors. The power cord brings house current into the machine. A lower harness on many models runs to the motor, drain pump and actuator.

How it works

Each wire carries power or a signal, and plug-in connectors join the harness to each part. Vibration and wear can loosen a connector or damage a wire, which leads to faults that come and go.

Signs it is failing

Communication, motor and sensor codes can come from a bad harness connection rather than the part on the end of it.

Can you replace it yourself?

With the washer unplugged, you can look for loose plugs and obvious damage. Tracing a broken wire or replacing a harness or cord is work on the machine's internal wiring, so leave it to a tech. Stop using a cord that's cut or has a broken ground pin.

Always unplug the washer or switch off its breaker before opening any panel, and turn off water or gas where relevant.

Buying the right part

Harnesses are specific to model and position (upper, lower, motor). A replacement cord should come with its strain relief.
